BACK 2 BACK is a contemporary dance performance with 2 pieces which were specifically put together to celebrate the 5 years anniversary of ilDance.

The directors of ilDance, Israel Aloni and Lee Brummer are independent choreographers who create works both as an artistic duo as well as independently of one another.

In BACK 2 BACK they present two works which they created separately, AN I FOR AN I by Lee Brummer & cast and CATHARSES by Israel Aloni & cast.

The performance exposes the multilayered choreographic practice that ilDance fosters as it is led by two powerful, unique and passionate artists.

AN I FOR AN I

An I for an I is a multidisciplinary performance which explores the subjective self. It questions what makes us who we are, and what makes us individuals.

As humans, our physical being continuously changes; An I for an I reflects on the correspondence between the ever changing physical body and the constant matter within us. What is this grid or frame of “self” on which we hang?

The creation process engaged a diverse group of international performers that were especially chosen for the making of the work. This included over eighteen months of research and exploration on the subject matter.

The performance outcome is based on autobiographical events of the cast. They reveal stories, thoughts and ideas related to their past and present, such as pivotal incidents which they feel have led them to be the individuals they are today.

The soundtrack contains interviews with the performers embedded in the original music score by Domenico Angarano.

CATHARSES

In the research leading to the creation of CATHARSES, choreographer Israel Aloni sensed the urgent need to create a new language which would express the exact fascination which was on his mind. This is how the term femalism was created.

Femaleism is the advocacy for the female form and being. It relates to female as an energetic force which is vivid in micro and macro existences. It emerges from the notion that Female is not only a gender which dictates a social status and biological properties. The femaleism in CATHARSES challenges the limited and discriminating approach towards female and its significance in our reality.

CATHARSES is a physical, sensual and emotional exploration of various female qualities. It approaches gender as an energy, a spiritual and universal force which is totally freed from the mandatory social constructs. We all contain female in us and are contained by the female around us, how does it suffice? The piece is a vital cycle of a courageous release which takes the performers, and possibly the audience, through an ecstatic adventure.

CATHARSES is a solo piece for two performers. It is a protest of two individuals voicing the one voice of femaleism. The performers transform into unique beings that cross the gender boundaries into female dominated dimension. Starting with the womb, continuing with life and ending with a transcendence by uniting with earth.
